Have We Reached the Point of No Return on Artificial Intelligence?
A Student of Technology asks:
Mr. Thall, have we reached the point of no return on Artificial Intelligence?
Nelson S. Thall replies:
Civilization may already have crossed the point at which Artificial Intelligence ceased being merely a tool and became an environment.
Most people still imagine technology as something optional, something humanity freely chooses to use or reject. But once a technology penetrates communication, education, finance, government, medicine, warfare, entertainment, and daily perception simultaneously, it no longer functions merely as a device. It becomes an environmental condition shaping human behavior invisibly from the outside in.
Artificial Intelligence was not introduced slowly enough for civilization to fully perceive its long-term effects before becoming dependent upon it. The speed of electronic culture itself tends to bypass reflective awareness. Technologies are often socially installed before their psychological, cultural, and spiritual consequences can be properly understood.
In this sense, many people increasingly feel that Artificial Intelligence was foisted upon society as an inevitability rather than consciously chosen through informed collective understanding.
But this pattern is not new. All technology is an extension of mankind itself. Human beings project their powers outward into technological form and then gradually become hypnotized by those very extensions.
Like Narcissus staring into the river, modern man becomes fascinated and narcotized by his own reflected extensions without recognizing them as his own. Narcissus did not fall in love with himself. He became numbed by his own extension. The ancient Greeks understood that extensions produce narcosis. That is why numbing agents are called narcotics after Narcissus.
Every technological extension is also an amputation. The extension numbs the very human faculty it amputates via amplification. Self-amputation forbids self-recognition. Society’s idol worship eventually produces an inability to know or perceive itself. When civilizations lose their image of themselves, profound cultural disorientation follows.
This process has repeated itself throughout history. Empires such as Babylon and Rome ultimately collapsed after losing coherent cultural self-recognition. The eminent Professor Harold Innis examined this pattern extensively in his landmark work Empire and Communications.
Artificial Intelligence amplifies memory, retrieval, pattern recognition, prediction, and simulation at planetary scale. But the danger is that humanity is gradually surrendering those same human capacities to the machine itself. This is already happening, and civilization increasingly feeds the addiction.
The deeper problem is that it is now too late to either ban or properly regulate Artificial Intelligence after it has already become environmentally embedded within civilization itself. We are now well past the point of no return unfortunately, to the point that humanity may already be effectively doomed by its unconscious technological immersion. Only time will tell.
Since it is now likely too late to completely stop society from its growing addiction to AI idol worship, the only remaining hope may be a rapid global education in Technology Ecology. Humanity must learn to study the hidden psychic, cultural, and environmental effects of its technologies before surrendering entirely to them.
Otherwise the robots will completely dominate the very Control Tower of Human Navigation itself; some argue that this has already taken place.
Therefore awareness remains the only possibility of recovery. Technology Ecology exists precisely to reveal the hidden grounds and hypnotic effects of technological environments before humanity becomes completely narcotized by its own extensions.
