THE BRACELET THAT REMEMBERS SO YOU WON’T
When a Culture Mistakes Storage for Memory
A Student of Technology asks:
Mr. Thall, Amazon is now selling Bee Frontier, a US$74.99 device you wear on your wrist or clip to your clothing. When switched on, it turns conversations into summaries. For US$11.99 a month, its Bee Pro subscription adds suggested to-dos and promises: “Every conversation, remembered forever.” What will be the effect of this on conversation, and on our culture? Amazon News
Nelson S. Thall replies:
The device is sold to keep you in the moment. Letting it take notes may leave you freer to listen. But Bee also advertises action items from “calls you were too busy to fully follow.” Amazon News There is the opening for a reversal: assistance becomes substitution when keeping the record becomes an excuse not to attend to the person. A spoken sentence can be preserved; the attention someone needed from you at that moment cannot be supplied afterward. The bracelet captures words. It does not perform the human act of receiving another person. When we mistake its record for our participation, conversation becomes something to retrieve rather than an event to inhabit. The device sold for presence can then become permission for absence. A culture devoted to storing everything may come to believe it no longer needs to remember. But retrieving a forgotten appointment is not the same as carrying the memory of a life shared with others. Memory is what shaped you. Storage is what you search. The danger is that we cease to feel what is missing. That is the numbness: not the absence of loss, but the absence of awareness of it. Left unexamined, the substitution could become a cultural habit: preserving the words of our encounters while neglecting the people in them, and calling that being present.
