The Collapse of Shared Reality
A Student of Technology asks:
The Guardian says people are beginning to feel as though reality itself has become unstable because digital media, algorithms, social media and AI are surrounding them with endless streams of fragmented and contradictory information.
If our technologies are now shaping perception environmentally rather than simply delivering information, then Mr. Thall, have we entered an age where human beings no longer experience a shared reality but instead live inside machine-generated realities tailored to each individual?”
Nelson S. Thall replies:
Yes. But the public completely misunderstands the source of the crisis. They believe reality has become unstable because of the information or content moving across digital networks. In fact, the changes have very little to do with the content itself. The environment is the force that alters human perception. Print created continuity and shared awareness. Digital media has created fragmentation, acceleration and immersion. The medium reshapes the human nervous system regardless of what specific messages are transmitted through it.
The psychological effect begins with the screen itself. The brain does not interpret electronic images the same way it interprets print. Print is fixed, linear and sequential. The screen is immediate, simultaneous and constantly shifting. The nervous system is placed into a continuous state of stimulation, interruption and emotional participation. The citizen no longer calmly observes information. He is neurologically immersed inside the flow of the medium itself.
Every click, search and emotional reaction then becomes behavioural data used by algorithms to construct individualized realities for each user. AI intensifies this condition because the machine no longer simply distributes information. It filters, ranks and generates reality on the citizen’s behalf. Civilization depends upon shared perception. Once perception itself becomes technologically privatized, society fragments psychologically, politically and spiritually. The electric environment does not merely change communication. It changes consciousness.”
