THE DAILY McLUHAN DIALOGUES™ — McDialogues™

An Exploration of Technology Ecology as an Anchor in a Sea of Change™ and Tactical Training in Counter-Propaganda Science

The Long Parade of Harmful Children’s Toys

A Student of Technology asks:

Mr. Thall, a study published in the journal Pediatrics and now circulating widely through clinical channels has produced striking findings. Researchers at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, the University of California Berkeley and Columbia University followed more than ten thousand American adolescents.

Twelve year olds who owned a smartphone showed a 31 percent higher risk of depression, a 40 percent higher risk of obesity and a 60 percent higher risk of insufficient sleep compared to peers without a phone. The earlier the smartphone arrived in the child’s life, the worse the outcomes.

Why does society keep welcoming new children’s products only to discover the damage decades later?

Nelson S. Thall replies:

The smartphone study is the latest data point in a parade that goes back more than a century. The pattern is always the same. A new product enters the children’s market with a marketing story of fun, safety, education or convenience. The harm accumulates quietly. The clinicians begin to raise the alarm. The industry denies, deflects, funds counter studies and lobbies against regulation. Eventually the harm becomes undeniable. The product is restricted. But the damage to a generation is already done. The next product is already in the pipeline.

Lead paint on cribs and toys. Asbestos in children’s modeling clay. Radium in glow in the dark toys. Lawn darts that killed children for years before they were banned in 1988. Cigarettes marketed to children with cartoon characters. DDT sprayed in homes. Sugar cereals marketed as breakfast. High fructose corn syrup in nearly everything fed to a child. Football helmets sold as safe while the chronic traumatic encephalopathy data piled up. Vaping devices in fruit flavours engineered for teenagers. Social media offered free to thirteen year olds. And now the smartphone in the hand of the eight year old.

Each generation of parents was told the new product was safe. Each generation discovered too late that it was not. The data on the smartphone now joins this parade. A 31 percent higher risk of depression at age twelve. A 40 percent higher risk of obesity. A 60 percent higher risk of insufficient sleep. The earlier the smartphone arrived, the deeper the damage.

The question is not why this keeps happening. The question is why society cannot see it while it is happening. The answer is McLuhan’s first principle. Self amputation forbids self recognition. The very technology that produces the harm also numbs the population to its effects. The parent reaching for the phone to soothe the screaming child cannot perceive that the phone is what made the child unable to soothe herself. The culture that lives inside the electronic environment cannot feel what the electronic environment is doing to the children inside it.

The parade will continue until the culture learns to see. Counter Propaganda Science is the discipline of seeing. The Daily McLuhan Dialogues exist to name what the marketing buries. The harmful children’s toy of tomorrow is already on the drawing board. The only question is whether this generation will be the first to recognize it before the next generation pays the bill.
