The Monsters Return to the Map:The Image Claims the Power to Replace the World.
A Student of Technology asks:
Mr. Thall, The Guardian reported on August 4, 2026 that Google briefly allowed people to use Artificial Intelligence to place invented scenes over satellite images of real locations inside Google Earth. Within a day, users had generated and shared fabricated refugees, bomb craters, hospitals, and nuclear facilities. Google then withdrew the feature. Why would anyone want to do that?
Nelson S. Thall replies:
Look at the newscaster closing with, "And that's the way it is." He is not giving you reality. He is charismatically sealing a selected pattern and certifying it as the world. Google Earth enhanced that power until one eye could survey the planet at electric speed. At the speed of light, reality loses its hardware quality. Places and events reach us not through bodily presence, but as images and patterns. The satellite image seemed trustworthy because no human witness was visible. Google then allowed the image-maker to rewrite the witness. The map that testified to the event could now manufacture it.
Before aerial and satellite photography, no map could pose as an eyewitness. A medieval map could place Paradise at the top and monsters among real places because it showed not only where the world was, but what the world meant. The satellite displaced the imagining hand with a machine eye. Artificial Intelligence brings the monsters back, and they had no distance to travel. When the world arrives only as image, fantasy is the only reality left to us. Science fiction becomes the ordinary form in which electric man receives his planet, and a people handed nothing but images will do with images what men have always done with them. At the speed of light man is discarnate. He travels as an image and leaves the body behind. But identity is bodily, and the man without a body has no outline, no edge, no place where he stops and the world begins. He is a nobody, and a nobody must prove he is somebody. That is why McLuhan said in 1977 that on the air we have no physical body, and that all violence is a quest for identity. It is no accident that the fabrications featured refugees, bomb craters, hospitals, and nuclear danger. The discarnate nobody could not put his body back into the map, so he put wounds into it instead.
Our speed-up carries us through centuries of change within a decade, while human perception remains slow. Institutions and identities dissolve before we understand what is replacing them. The medium created to show us the real Earth turns into a machine for placing fantasies upon it. Google said the images were watermarked and did not alter the public map. But the screenshot leaves the controlled environment, and the image is seen before the warning is examined. The fabricated scene enters the Private Citadel of Consciousness not as fantasy, but carrying the authority of evidence. The image is no longer content to represent the world. It claims the power to replace it.
