The MRI Confirms What McLuhan Saw Decades Ago
A Student of Technology asks:
Mr. Thall, in a Time magazine roundup published in early May 2026, Tristan Harris of the Center for Humane Technology offered a striking diagnosis of attention optimizing systems.
He said these systems have reshaped the white matter of our brains and terraformed the ways humans perceive their reality, by privileging outrage, novelty and emotional intensity.
Has Harris correctly diagnosed what is happening? And if not, what has he missed?
Nelson S. Thall replies:
McLuhan long ago was quoted as saying that Reality loses its hardware quality when you live at the speed of light.
Tristan Harris has arrived at the right diagnosis through the wrong door. He says these systems have reshaped the white matter of our brains and terraformed how humans perceive reality. He is correct.
The MRI evidence from Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and the National Institutes of Health Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study confirms measurable changes in the white matter tracts of children with high screen exposure, particularly in regions that support language development.
But Harris is a designer who left Google. He blames attention extraction engineering. He thinks the cure is humane design. This misses the deeper diagnosis. The terraforming of reality happens automatically whenever a technology powerful enough to enclose human experience comes into use. The satellite terraformed reality in 1957. The phonetic alphabet terraformed reality two and a half thousand years ago. Television terraformed reality in the 1950s. The smartphone after 2007. None of this required engineers optimizing for outrage.
The pattern is older than the engineers Harris blames. The white matter changes that MRI scans now reveal in children are the structural confirmation of what Quebec speech therapists observed clinically. Screen time produces language delay in toddlers.
The same mechanism terraforms the adult social field. Marshall McLuhan saw this pattern decades before the MRI scanner could measure it. He observed in the 1960s and 1970s that every powerful medium restructures the human nervous system and the social field. The brain imaging technology of the 21st century is now catching up to what the literary critic and Media Ecologist diagnosed by observation alone.
Outrage optimization did not cause this. Outrage optimization is one of the symptoms. Harris sees the outrage and blames the engineers. The Media Ecologist sees the environment and recognizes that the engineers themselves operate inside the same environment that captures everyone else. The fish inside the water does not see the water. Neither does the engineer.
Every environment created by a powerful technology terraforms perception. The MRI confirms it. The speech therapists confirm it. McLuhan named it decades ago. The work now is to name the environment so the population can begin to navigate it.
