THE NEWSPAPER DISAPPEARS INTO THE SUMMARY
Readers Take the Summary. Newsrooms Pay the Price.
A Student of Technology asks:
Mr. Thall, the publisher of the Daily Mirror and Daily Express is cutting 220 editorial jobs as more readers get their news from AI-generated summaries without visiting the original news sites. If AI can tell me what happened faster, what exactly am I losing?
Nelson S. Thall replies:
Professor McLuhan saw the newspaper as a flat mosaic: politics beside sports, war beside advertising, markets beside crime, all appearing simultaneously. That form requires the reader to move across the field and recognize relationships for himself. Search engines had already begun breaking that mosaic into individual stories. AI summaries now take another step. Instead of leading you to the story and allowing you to compare it with other stories and sources, the machine increasingly reads across the field and hands you a synthesis. Like the old oracle, it answers when asked. But the oracle's answer had to be interpreted. This answer arrives already interpreted. What disappears is not simply the page. It is the reader's practice of encountering the pieces and making the pattern.
The AI summary depends upon journalists to investigate, gather and verify the information it condenses, yet by reducing the need to visit the original news source, it helps weaken the economic structure that pays those journalists. Pushed far enough, the machine that brings you the news faster leaves less news to bring. At the same time, pattern recognition itself moves from reader to machine. The more the machine does that work, the less we practice it, and the more we lean on the machine. That is the TECHNOTRAP™. What kind of reader does that produce? One who receives a finished interpretation rather than entering the field and discovering relationships for himself. The newspaper asked you to make the pattern. The AI summary makes the pattern for you.
