The Robot Revolution

Technology companies are investing billions of dollars in humanoid robots capable of performing physical tasks in factories, warehouses, retail environments, and eventually many forms of labor currently performed by human beings. Supporters argue that such robots could increase productivity and address labor shortages.


A Student of Technology asks:
What happens to a civilization when human participation is no longer necessary for progress?


Nelson S. Thall replies:
For thousands of years, civilization has been organized around human participation. Progress required farmers to grow food, laborers to build roads, craftsmen to make goods, and workers to operate the machinery of society.
The humanoid robot introduces a new possibility. For the first time in history, physical labor and certain forms of mental labor may increasingly be performed without direct human participation.
The question is not whether robots will replace every job. The question is whether society will continue to require as many people to accomplish progress.
Jobs disappear, but not the job-holders.
That simple fact may become one of the defining challenges of the twenty-first century.
Work has always provided more than income. It has provided identity, purpose, discipline, social status, and a sense of contribution. If human participation becomes less necessary to production, society may be forced to rethink the relationship between people and progress itself.
Some observers have already noticed a curious development. Birth rates are falling across much of the developed world. South Korea’s has dropped below one child per woman, among the lowest rates ever recorded, and most wealthy nations now sit well under the level needed to replace their populations. Families are shrinking, and in some countries population growth has stalled.
Whether these trends are directly tied to automation is open to debate. But they raise an intriguing possibility. Are societies already adapting to a world in which fewer workers are required?
Every major technology produces consequences its inventors never anticipated. That was one of McLuhan’s central warnings: the effects of a new technology have little to do with the intentions behind it. The greatest weakness of the robot revolution is that it cannot foresee the consequences of its own success. It may solve labor shortages while creating crises of purpose.
It may increase productivity while diminishing participation. It may generate unprecedented abundance while raising profound questions about what it means to be needed.
The issue is not whether robots can work like humans.
The issue is whether humanity can preserve a sense of purpose in a world that increasingly functions without human participation.
