THE WEAPON AND THE COUNTERWEAPON

WHEN AI BECOMES AN ARMS RACE

A Student of Technology asks:

Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon has resigned, warning that AI companies are racing toward “self-improving superintelligence” and “gambling with our lives.” But if nations and private laboratories all believe they cannot afford to slow down because somebody else will get there first, haven’t we simply created another arms race? And could the danger itself eventually create the pressure for the controls needed to contain it?

Nelson S. Thall replies:

At electric speed, strategy becomes environment. The weapon and the counterweapon are developed on the same laboratory bench. AI extends strategic intelligence, obsolesces slower forms of decision and restraint, retrieves the ancient arms race, and when pushed far enough reverses into a condition where the race itself becomes the danger. That is the technotrap.

Professor McLuhan would not begin by asking whether the machine intends to destroy us. He would ask whether we can perceive the environment we have created before it acts upon us invisibly. Coxon’s warning therefore becomes part of the counter-environment. The alarm makes the hidden ground visible. Once the danger becomes visible, it creates pressure for political, scientific, and public controls. Humanity has repeatedly stepped back from the brink before. The first defense is perception.
