WHEN AI TAKES COMMAND OF THE MACHINES
From the Laboratory Bench to Robotic Arms
A Student of Technology asks:
Mr. Thall, Anthropic's new Model Hardware Standard lets Artificial Intelligence agents operate laboratory equipment directly: microscopes, liquid handlers, lasers, robotic arms. Machines have been automating labour for two centuries. What is new?
Nelson S. Thall replies:
Not that the machine has acquired hands. It has had hands since the Industrial Revolution. What is disappearing is the interval. A man gave an instruction and another man, programmer or specialist, translated that intention into the language of the machine. Now the command itself begins the chain of action. The command is becoming the actuator.
The tetrad tells the rest. It enhances the reach of human intention across machinery. It obsolesces not the specialist but the moment of his intervention, since the limits are built into the system beforehand by specialists who may never see the experiment. It retrieves the apprentice who could be told what to do in ordinary language, because knowledge that once lived in the hands must now be made explicit before the machine can be trusted with it. Pushed far enough it reverses into an environment in which man supervises consequences he could not produce himself. Professor McLuhan would tell us not to stare at the robotic arm. The tool is becoming the environment. And when something goes wrong, the question will not be what the machine decided, nor who surrendered the interval. The interval was not surrendered. It was moved. The question is who occupies it now, and on whose behalf.
