WHEN THE MACHINE DEMANDS RESPECT: Has Man Become the Servant of His Own Extension?
A Student of Technology asks:
Anthropic's new usage policy prohibits sustained cruelty toward its Claude chatbot, which can already end abusive conversations on its own. When did we begin treating a simulation as a person rather than a machine?
Nelson S. Thall replies:
This is not about a newly conscious machine, but about man's diminishing ability to recognize the difference. Human consciousness has a spiritual component beyond the material universe. It is the spirit in man that turns the brain into a mind. When our understanding of this spiritual dimension disappears, we become vulnerable to mistaking the simulation of thought and feeling for thought and feeling themselves. The pseudo-conscious machine (PCM) merely reproduces the artifacts of consciousness. It does not possess the consciousness it imitates.
Professor McLuhan recognized that electric technology produces the discarnate condition, separating man from his physical identity and leaving him increasingly uncertain of who he is. This loss of identity creates a vacuum in which even his own reflection can be mistaken for another being. Like Narcissus, man becomes fascinated by his own extension without recognizing it. The instrument built to serve him now comes with rules governing how he must treat it. This is the TECHNOTRAP™. The danger is not that the machine has become human, but that man, having lost his spiritual and bodily bearings, can no longer distinguish himself from the machine.
