When the Machine Must Introduce Itself
Trust Begins With the Messenger Now.
A Student of Technology asks: Mr. Thall, the European Union will soon require many Artificial Intelligence systems to identify themselves when interacting with people, and to disclose Artificial Intelligence-generated content. Why would governments need to pass a law requiring a machine to announce that it is a machine?
Nelson S. Thall replies:
Identity has quietly become the newest casualty of the Information Age. For thousands of years we assumed that every conversation had a human source. The voice itself was its own credential. Today that assumption has vanished. We have entered an age in which identity must be certified before communication can even begin.
Artificial Intelligence enhances communication with astonishing speed and scale, while obsolescing certainty about the source. It retrieves the ancient custom of the formal introduction, yet reverses into a world where every message requires proof of origin before it can be trusted. Marshall McLuhan urged us to study media because they quietly rearrange the assumptions beneath a civilization. This law is not the rearrangement. It is the confession that the rearrangement has already taken place.
The machine must announce that it is a machine. That tells us something about the source, but almost nothing about what the medium is doing to us while we read it. A man may know perfectly well that he is speaking to a machine and be remade by it just as surely. He taught that the medium is the message, and that we must stop staring at the content long enough to see what carries it. We have not learned that lesson. We have merely traded one question about the content for another: we used to ask, "What was said?" Now we ask, "Who said it?" Both are questions about the juicy piece of meat the burglar carries to quiet the watchdog of the mind, while the burglar walks on.
Mark what has become of the word itself. Identity once meant who a man is. In this law it means proof of who sent the message. Identity was something you had; it is becoming something you prove. Trust no longer begins with the message. It begins with authenticating the messenger.
