THE DAILY McLUHAN DIALOGUES™ — McDialogue™
An Exploration of Technology Ecology as an Anchor in a Sea of Change™ and Tactical Training in Counter-Propaganda Science

When Toys Become Weapons of Perception
A Student of Technology asks:
Mr. Thall, a recent AI-generated propaganda video from Iran depicts war, world leaders, military conflict, and civilian suffering entirely through LEGO characters. Why would a propaganda video about war be made with LEGO characters?
Nelson S. Thall replies:
The choice of LEGO is not accidental. The toy is part of the message.
War is among the most complex realities humans encounter. It involves history, economics, religion, geography, technology, competing interests, and competing narratives. Yet LEGO transforms complexity into simplicity. The world becomes a collection of colorful blocks assembled into a story populated by heroes, villains, and victims.
A toy lowers resistance. We approach it with curiosity rather than skepticism. What might feel harsh, manipulative, or propagandistic in a news broadcast can feel harmless when presented as animation. The medium softens the audience before the message arrives.
Marshall McLuhan taught that the medium is the message. In this case, the toy format converts geopolitics into a children's morality play. The audience is encouraged to feel rather than investigate. Complex systems disappear into the background while emotionally charged symbols move into the foreground.
The result is not necessarily deception. The result is simplification.
Every age translates reality into its dominant forms. Print translated reality into arguments. Television translated reality into images. Artificial intelligence now translates reality into instantly generated stories, simulations, and emotional experiences.
The deeper question is not whether the LEGO narrative is true or false.
The deeper question is what happens to human understanding when the world's most serious conflicts are increasingly experienced as toys, memes, animations, and entertainment.
When war becomes a toy, the audience may no longer distinguish between analysis and amusement.
The most powerful propaganda is often not that which persuades us to believe something. It is that which persuades us that we are merely being entertained.
The AI-generated LEGO propaganda video therefore reveals something far larger than modern politics. It reveals that in the emerging AI environment, even war must become play before it can capture attention.
The toy is not carrying the message.
The toy is the message.
