Will AI Glasses Rewire the Nervous System?
A Student of Technology asks:
News reports suggest that AI glasses that fuse information directly into the field of vision may arrive as early as next year. If information becomes part of seeing itself, will AI glasses rewire the nervous system?
Nelson S. Thall replies:
Yes. Every major medium rewires the nervous system by altering the pattern of stimulation to which that system must adapt. AI glasses are no exception.
On the positive side, AI glasses could ease the neck strain that comes from forever bending toward a smartphone. They promise instant information, navigation, translation, and context — delivered without forcing the eye away from the world it is already watching.
On the negative side, the eye may tire as it shuttles endlessly between physical reality and digital overlay. And attention itself may fracture. The smartphone interrupts life by demanding that we look away from reality. AI glasses interrupt life while we are looking directly at it.
The deeper change is to the nervous system itself. By mounting a stream of information directly before the eyes, AI glasses may train us to expect perpetual stimulation and perpetual assistance. Memory, observation, and concentration would then adapt to a world in which information is always present — and always competing for our notice.
The question is not whether AI glasses are good or bad. The question is what kind of human being emerges from prolonged life inside an environment where perception itself has been electronically augmented. The effect of any technology lies less in what the tool does than in what it does to its user.
